Consuming a wide variety of fruits and vegetables forms part of any healthy balanced diet. Fruit and veg provides rich sources of vitamins, potassium and other minerals, carotenoids, flavonoids, fiber and phytochemicals – useful for preventing or treating cardiovascular disease, stroke, some cancers, hypertension, osteoporosis, and other diseases.
The popularity of veganism has highlighted that we all need to eat more plant-based foods and reduce our consumption of meat. And restaurants and food outlets have caught on. However it’s all too easy to become reliant on bread, pasta, beans and cheese when preparing our own meals.
Google ‘vegetarian definition’ and it defines what a person does NOT eat, rather than what they DO, or more importantly SHOULD!
The Vegetarian Society have a far clearer and more useful definition:
“A vegetarian is someone who lives on a diet of grains, pulses, legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, fungi, algae, yeast and/or some other non-animal-based foods (e.g. salt) with, or without, dairy products, honey and/or eggs…"
Apply this when preparing your meals and you can’t really go wrong.
Some say eating healthily is more expensive – it doesn’t have to be. Visit your local greengrocers or market (I’m a fan of Boz’s in Horsell) and buy what you need (not what you’ll end up throwing in the bin!).
